Dance for wellbeing: Akademi and CW+

Dance has the power to brighten a person’s day, whether through interaction with the dancer or just watching a dance performance. Akademi has been taking professional dancers into hospitals across London for the past 21 years and is continually finding new ways and new spaces to dance in; atriums, waiting lounges, day rooms, hospital schools and at the bedside. Dance has the ability to connect at an emotional level, as well as allow people to explore their creativity and rhythm.

Akademi’s dance artists from dance genres including Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kuchipudi and Bollywood arrive at the hospitals in their full costume including ghungroos (ankle bells), which can be heard along the corridors of the hospital wards, enticing patients and staff alike. Not only does this brighten the patients’ and visitors’ day, but it also brings a welcome change in mood and atmosphere for the staff. More often than not the staff are there, joining in the dancing with the patients, creating a different relationship and building connections between staff and patients.

In 2019, Akademi celebrates 40 years of imagining, inspiring, connecting and creating South Asian dance in the UK. This also coincides with the 21 year anniversary of collaboration between Akademi and CW+, the charity of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, as part of their extensive arts in health programme. We have been working with the charity to bring a rich cultural and artistic experience to patients, visitors and staff at both their hospitals - Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospitals.

As part of these celebrations and London Creativity and Wellbeing week, Akademi are presenting a special performance of Classical Indian dance at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital atrium in collaboration with Pagrav Dance Company; 1:00pm – 1:45pm Thursday 13th June.

Pagrav (meaning the 'sound of feet') Dance Company promotes kathak; giving the form a modern context and renewed presentation while encouraging new thinking and understanding of the discipline.

Come and experience the power of dance at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital!
