About the event

Using music to connect with children in challenging circumstances

‘Reaching Out’ is a one-day conference focussing on creative and imaginative ways to use music to engage young people, whatever the challenges they face. Whether because of language barriers, behavioural issues or a variety of additional needs, music can often be the most powerful way to reach out to young people in challenging circumstances. The day will offer a range of workshops, presentations and discussion opportunities to explore effective ways to connect with children and young people through music-making in both mainstream and special schools.

Keynote speakers:
Stuart Walker and Clare Lovett

Introducing the innovative series of music making projects, led by Spitalfields Music at Cherry Trees School, which demonstrate the transformational power of music.

Phil Mullen
Songs, rhythm and composition ideas that have proved invaluable in engaging hard to reach children and young people.

Tobias Sturmer
Hands-on exploration of creative activities designed to include, motivate and stimulate all learners.

Cherry Trees School
Pupils from the Cherry Trees School demonstrate some of their talent and awesome performance skills. They will be supported by Roshi Nasehi and Jim Cartwright.

Fairbeats: Jennifer Raven
A practical exploration of creative music-making activities developed with ‘Action for Refugees’ in Lewisham.

Gawain Hewitt
Gawain will share some of the music and ICT work he does with teenagers in PRUs, bringing music to young people who may have missed out on practical engagement with music and whose confidence will be low.

This event is being presented with the support of Rich Mix and Sound Connections.  More information on the work of Sound Connections is available at www.sound-connections.org.uk
