About the event

Launching our new touch screen audio guides which link relaxing music to key artworks in our collection so patients can follow interactive maps around the hospital as a distraction whilst undergoing treatment.

Patients in hospital are often faced with rather uninspiring tasks, such as practising walking down a corridor, or getting off the wards for a change of scene. At Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, we are launching a new and innovative way of motivating patients.

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital has a visual art collection of over 1000 pieces and was awarded museum status in 2009. Many of these artworks, including site-specific commissions, are available in public atriums for anybody to view. Teaming up with technology company Imagineear and funded by Arts Council England, we have developed an audio guide tour around these artworks for patients, visitors and staff. But instead of verbal information about each artwork, paintings, sculptures and installations have been coupled with a piece of music we feel reflects their message.

Join us on Monday 17th June for the launch of these wonderful audio guides. We will be explaining more about the guides, offering people a chance to take a tour around the artworks with an audio guide listening to the music selected, and explaining the next stage of the project in partnership with the Royal College of Music, which involves the commissioning of 15 brand new pieces of music from emerging composers to match our most iconic works of art.
