About the event

Flaming Skirt Festival is unique contemporary arts festival based in the East Midlands. It’s art on the move, transported by a double-decker bus; a day of travelling around to different small towns and villages. Through collaboration and competition, people of all ages actively engage in the construction of contemporary artwork. This pop-up community of individuals and extended families, experiences an inspiring adventure – performance refreshments, intriguing games, constructions, instant theatre, creative walking and of course memorable activities on board the bus.

How did it all begin? In 2012 when the Olympic Torch Relay skirted round Amber Valley Borough, Derbyshire, local artist Sally Lemsford devised a fun protest emulating the Torch Relay, an alternative arts festival. It had mini-events in a visitor centre, church hall, railway centre, under a railway bridge, nearby the  Canal and at an old school: http://flamingskirtfestival.blogspot.co.uk

In 2014 it looked at what used to happen, what happens now and what could happen in Amber Valley village halls: http://flamingskirtfestival.tumblr.com

This year on Sunday 7 June, it will visit Ashby de-la-Zouch, Moira and Snibston in NW Leicestershire.

Flaming Skirt Festival uses the arts as a tool to promote and improve the wellbeing of residents and communities particularly those in disadvantaged areas. Last year it contributed to the setting up of a village action group that has organised lots of events for extended families, including a Saturday art and craft club, and dance fitness sessions.

Flaming Skirt Festival helps to reduce the sense of isolation and increase pride in the locality. As well as encouraging people to experience great arts activities and learn new skills, it gets people together to look at where they live with fresh eyes. This year it aims to get people to celebrate their local community spaces and places saying ‘This is a great place to live’, and for visitors to say ‘This is a really interesting place to visit and work’.
