About the event

The Heart of Welbeing is an installation at the heart centre / heart of The Maudsley Hospital until the 27th June.

Following the Pathway of Nourishment installation at the Bethlem Hospital (April, 2019) the Umbrellas of Wellbeing have been installed at the heart of the Maudsley hospital, to form the Hearts of Wellbeing. This event coincides with Volunteers Week at SlaM (1-7thJune) and Creativity and Wellbeing week during (13-19thJune 2019).

“Over the years since I recuperated from my head injury at the Maudsley hospital, I have passed this cops and thought it was a magical space, somewhere to ponder and refresh oneself. Here I am again, years later aiming to enhance the space and encourage others in their local wellbeing experience.”- Xavier White

The Umbrella’s of Wellbeing express the shelter of care created by interactions between patients and their carers in the Dance of Caring Persons (Hardy & White, 2017). This caring dance of humanity has been dancing for all our existence.  Care and it’s 5 ingredients of Compassion, Courage, Commitment, Communication, Competency, form essential elements of the dance, enhancing our existence under which the canopy of nature, stimulating and emulating a place and space where the patient can recover.

The Umbrellas of Wellbeing sing like William Blake’s youthful angelic vision on Peckham Rye with movements of courage, compassion, communication, competency and commitment "filled with angels, bright angelic wings bespangling every bough like stars"The Duchess of Cambridge’s woodland garden for Chelsea flower show (2019) was designed ‘to highlight the physical and emotional wellbeing of forest bathing.’
