About the event

The Bethlem Art Collection includes nearly 1,000 artworks from the past few centuries. In addition to portraits of kings, queens and doctors associated with the charitable hospital, most of the collection has been produced by patients at Bethlem and its sister hospitals. We continue to collect art by past and present service users, contributing to our aim to celebrate the lives and achievements of people experiencing mental ill-health and de-stigmatising mental illness.

In 2013, all the oil paintings in our collection were photographed as part of a joint project by the BBC and the Public Catalogue Foundation to make available all oil paintings in public ownership. Our current exhibition displays a number of these works, many of which were previously in storage, including the artists Richard Dadd, Bryan Charnley, Marion Patrick and Olivia Gillow.

The museum is open Monday - Friday, 9.30 - 16.30. The exhibition continues after Creativity and Wellbeing Week, until 13 September 2013.
