About the event

A selection of works from 'Outside In: National', a ground-breaking triennial open-entry exhibition which recently showcased around 80 works by artists from the margins.

Having been exhibited in the main spaces of Pallant House Gallery until February 2013, 'Outside In: National' inspired a tour showcasing 20 selected pieces from the show, including the six award-winners, which began in March 2013 in Stowmarket, and ends in January 2014 in West Bromwich.

'Outside In' was initially set up in 2006 by Pallant House Gallery to provide opportunities for artists with a desire to create who see themselves as facing a barrier to the art world. The goal of the project is to create a fairer art world which rejects traditional values and institutional judgements about whose work can and should be displayed.

Described as offering a 'radical perspective on Britain today' by Jonathan Jones of The Guardian, 'Outside In: National' provides an opportunity for artists working on the edges of society to have their work displayed via an open-entry competition. From substance misusers to self-taught visionaries, the exhibition provides a unique insight into the extraordinary breadth and vitality of work produced by individuals from outside the mainstream art world.
