About the event

Come and experience The Reader Organisation's unique shared reading group model at the Southbank Centre, and hear from staff at The Reader Organisation and how their work is contributing to health and well-being in community settings, health centres, mental health hospitals and prisons.

The Reader Organisation aims to bring about a reading revolution, making the content of great books available to all. Our vision is to create a culture of shared reading in which great books are widely valued as a source of shared meanings. We believe reading can be serious and fun, life enhancing and creative for everyone. Our main work is Get Into Reading - a model of weekly, read-aloud groups. Led by a trained facilitator, these groups meet each week to read books and poems together. We read slowly, taking time over each text, allowing thoughts, connections and understanding to emerge. Members can choose to join in or not and at times the reading will stop to allow some talk about parts of the text, discussing what it might mean or reflecting on similar experiences of our own. Get Into Reading offers a non-stigmatised, non-threatening, but deeply rewarding experience where individuals join a wider cultural conversation.

Get Into Reading is considered an innovative health intervention. The unique model was pioneered by The Reader Organisation and its success has led to us being recognised as a leading innovator in using books and reading as a positive health and social care intervention. Participation allows people to improve their social functioning and to gain self-confidence, both of which are fundamental to regaining and maintaining their independence.
