'Nick Shaw had a great passion for life, a big man in every way.

He worked very hard as an an architect, eventually becoming principal architect engineer for Network Rail and was involved in many high profile redevelopments in this role.

He was enormously well respected by his colleagues and many friends.

Nick loved his work, coping with the demands and stresses of a full time pressurised job.

Yet somehow he managed to continue his first love of drawing and painting.

Nick created beautiful expressive drawings, the result of many years studying, observing and reacting to the discipline of drawing the model. Always unconventional Nick broke every rule in the book with regard to measure, material and scale to produce the most individual and cerebral drawings.

Within recent years Nick ran a course of life drawing classes, inspiring many with his warmth, enthusiasm, freedom and humour. On one memorable occasion he cheerfully stepped in as model when the need arose. Nick made a deep impression with illuminating insights into the practice of drawing.

In 2013 Nick, Gill, Caroline Wright and Nick Cobb were instrumental in setting up the successful local event Nunhead Art Trail. Nick exhibited his works including large scale charcoal life drawings as well as ink drawings, life models and landscapes.

In 2014 Nick held a solo show of his drawings that kicked off in tremendous style a series of seven shows in seven weeks in a pop up shop right in the heart of Nunhead, his home turf.

Nick was, and Gill still is, well known and loved local figures in Nunhead

Nick and Gill together encouraged, stimulated and supported each other enormously as artists.

Both were very generous towards other artists in all their contacts, especially those starting out, or needing encouragement.'
